On the eve of his twenty-first birthday, Prince Siegfried goes hunting by a glistening, moonlit lake. As he aims his crossbow at a nearby swan, it transforms before his eyes into the fair maiden Odette. She tells Siegfried of an evil sorcerer’s curse, trapping her in the body of a swan by day, only to be broken by a vow of true love. The prince, in love at first sight, swears to make this pledge and free Odette at his birthday ball the next night, but the sorcerer Von Rothbart will not be beaten so easily. He sends his daughter Odile, enchanted to look just like Odette, to trick Siegfried into betraying his true love. This magical tale of romance and treachery, with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov accompanied by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, reminds us of the strength of love against villainy.

Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy of warring households and star crossed lovers is retold through dance in Romeo and Juliet. The ballet follows the ill-fated Romeo and Juliet through sword fights in the street, grand masquerade balls, and young love that blossoms from a balcony and meets its end in a crypt. With Sergei Prokofiev’s score and choreography after Yuri Grigorovich and Sir Kenneth MacMillan, the ballet has become a classic in its own right while staying true to one of the most well-known stage productions of all time.
